Container weighing: are you ready for the IMO’s mandatory changes to SOLAS for container weight verification/verified gross mass (VGM)?
From 1 July 2016 it will be a legal requirement for every export container to have a verified gross mass declaration weight as a condition for loading aboard a vessel.
The IMO have declared two approved methods for weighing the containers. Method 1 – weighing the loaded container – is the preferred method; Method 2 – weighing the contents and adding it to the container tare weight – is considered impractical for certain types of cargo.
Container weighing: what does this mean for you?
It’s the shippers responsibility to provide the container’s verified gross mass, however this may not always be feasible and ports/terminals need to have a procedure in place to deal with the unverified containers.
A workable solution is required, to share the obligation in fulfilling the new requirements, without impacting on existing operations, while also providing a suitable support service to shippers.
